Tuesday: Ernest Turner's piano jazz history continues into the bebop era, where styles became more individual, at Sharp Nine at 7p.
Wednesday: A distinctive choice in midweek, between the nationally awarded Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble at the Cary Arts Center at 7p & fine tenor player Shaquim Muldrow at The Shed at 8p. Big band vs small group, high school players vs university players, big band charts vs the fruits of Shaquim's intense summer practicing. It is theoretically possible to do both: if the TYJE start on time, you can catch their first set & then speed up to Durham for Shaquim's second set (since gigs don't always start promptly at The Shed).
Friday: Some of the TYJE players reappear at Sharp Nine as singer Emma Lanford & the New Edition before going off to higher musical education, at 8p.
Saturday: A plethora of choices: the Alison Weiner trio at the Station's Saturday 2p jazz (get their early for seats); drummer Michael Ode's quartet at Sharp 9 at 8p (including Ernest Turner & Dave Finucane); Marimjazzia at Irregardless at 9p for your Latin dancing pleasure; Al Strong's Quartet at C Grace 9p; & Ariel Pocock & James Suter at the Empress Room at 9.
How's that?
