I hadn't been at The Shed for a while, so seeing the room slowly fill up as Zen Poets showed itself as a true band was encouraging. I'd also missed the first Station gig--which I'd heard was packed with an enthusiastic audience--& was just as encouraged by what I assume was a room full of Chapel Hillians & Carrboroids who like jazz but don't seek it out. Due to Robbie Link working with Michelle the Station manager, you can now escape the summer sun on Saturday afternoons at 2pm until 8/27. I'll be noting each of those sessions in Peter's Blog...
Though both venues were full or pretty full, what a nice contrast! Zen Poets, primarily made of younger players, had an enthusiastic, diverse audience at an almost-full Shed Friday night--while Scott Sawyer reunited with bassist Robbie Link & Dan Hall for a standing room only first set at The Station's Saturday afternoon series for what could have been the monthly AARP Jazz Club. The music was fine at both, people were there because they liked that jazz, & I've even more bullish about jazz in our area.

A little late with recommendations, but this week luckily starts slowly:
Tuesday: This is as much a recommendation to myself that I need to hear the Brad Maiani Trio at the Looking Glass in Carrboro. Wednesday: A non-recommendation: Yeaux Katz is taking a week off from their 2nd Wind/Carrboro gig this week. They'll be back next week. Thursday: A choice of melodic music: Orchestra Gardel at 7p at the downtown Raleigh Oak City Seven series; singer Angela Bingham at Irregardless; & singer Jo Gore with pianist Ernest Turner at 6:30 at the Parizade restaurant in Durham. Nice choices. Friday: Too many choices!! --> the Kobie Watkins Grouptet at Sharp Nine at 8p; the Zen Poets at the Shed 8p; Washington DC-based soulish-jazzish pianist Mark Meadows at 8 & 10p; singer/pianist Ariel Pocock at the Empress Room; trumpeter Lynn Grissett at C Grace at 9p; & an Al Strong duo at Alley 26 at 9p. Saturday: Jo Gore shifts to Irregardless for more standard singing at 9p; free jazz player Paul Swest & his group at the Shed at 8; & guitarist Scott Sawyer leading a trio at the Station in Carrboro at 2p (where I'll be, arriving early to arrive an expected crowd like last week). Monday Locavore/Extravore Jazz: Having seen extravore singer Tierney Sutton give the best performance from her I've seen last year at Sharp Nine, I can't recommend too highly her joining her guitarist, Serge Merlaud, with the locavore (& extravore) singer Kate McGarry & guitarist Keith Ganz. As of yesterday there were only 10 tickets left. Not to be missed... So I'm just back from listening to trombonist Danny Grewen & longtime local pianist Robert Griffin at Imbibe in Chapel Hill. What a contrast! They were playing jazz standards from the '30s in a very much 2016 bar, with a great selection of wines & the funkiest, tastiest bar food around. The music was great, especially Danny's singing & playing "I've Got You Under My Skin"...
